The iPhone OS 4.0 firmware was released yesterday at WWDC 2010 event by apple along the new iPhone 4.
Now if you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS model and want to upgrade your device to the new 4.0 firmware to access the brand new features, then here is how to update iPhone 3G/3GS to 4.0 firmware. Just do the following instructions to upgrade iPhone 3G/3GS to 4.0 firmware.
1. Using the cable, connect your iPhone 3G/3GS with the computer.
2. If iTunes didn’t open up automatically, open it.
3. Choose your iPhone from the devices list.
4. Under the Summary tab, click Check for Update.
5. Choose Download and Install to upgrade iPhone 3G/3GS to 4.0 firmware.
Now the 4.0 firmware update starts. Wait till the upgrade process finishes and your iPhone 3G/3GS will be ready with the 4.0 firmware.

In this case the iTunes can’t offer a software update…. I have a 3GS and I try it…. “This version of the iPhone software (3.1.3) is the current version.
I am sorry about that. I forgot to mention it. The iOS 4 was announced last day and it will be available from June 24 for the normal users. But the developers can access it now itself.
Well, I have a 3G who, as of this morning, had an OS of 3.1.3. Itunes said my OS was up to date and to check back on 6/17. HOWEVER, if you hit the “Update” icon next to that message, you will, indeed, download the 4.0 OS.
I have just finished doing so, takes a little times, but it can be done on the 3G

I am trying to update my phone, but when I press check for update it says
‘The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later’.
What does this mean ? :) I have signal, so I dont know what to check for.

I wonder if it’s possible to upgrade my jailbroken iphone 3gs v. 3.1(7C144) MF. 05.11.07 to the new version 4.0? I want the multitasking and other functions, should I do it if it’s possible?
